Working Together to Improve Diagnosis: Day Two Recap

Thanks for attending the second day of our virtual conference: Working Together to Improve Diagnosis! Day Two had a Patient Focus.

KEYNOTE: THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP:  HOW PATIENTS CAN – AND DO – PARTNER TO IMPROVE DIAGNOSIS IN MEDICINE

  • Suzanne Schrandt identified that patients and caregivers are the single constant involved with an unobstructed, longitudinal view of care and therefore should be part of the diagnostic team. She also noted that they should be included early in strategies to improve diagnostic process.

CANDOR: NORMALIZING COMPASSIONATE HONESTY AFTER UNEXPECTED HARM

  • Timothy McDonald, MD, JD, and Bruce Lambert, PhD, talked about the wall of silence after a diagnostic error and the collateral harm it causes to patients, families and involved clinicians. They explained that breaking down the wall of silence requires effectively and rapidly communicating after a harm event; apologizing and rapidly resolving cases of inappropriate care; learning from harm events; and supporting patients, families, clinicians and the care team.

PANEL DISCUSSION: EVOLUTION OF APPROACHES TO PATIENT HARM HEAL/CANDOR

  • Tom Evans, MD; Timothy McDonald, MD, JD; Bruce Lambert, PhD; Laurie-Drill-Mellum, MD, MPH; and Shelly Davis, JD, shared patient harm stories and explained how over the years the way we talk to patients and families about harm events has evolved. They talked about how we need to develop leaders in organizations to change culture locally so that rapid, honest communication and resolution after a harm event becomes the norm. They identified that this culture change needs to begin in health care professional education programs and include attorneys and medical professional liability companies who are also involved in resolving harm events.

There is still time to register for Day Three!
